This is a wonderful example of the popular walnut credenza with leather pulls and chromed steel legs from Florence Knoll. The labels states “Knoll Associates” which dates this piece as pre 1968 production. This is the office credenza model that features 2 door locks, 4 leather pulls and a Formica laminate top.
I wondered for some time why a company as prestigious as Knoll would produce these credenzas with laminate tops vs a more beautiful wood surface. It seems that in the early 60s Formica was considered an amazing new space age material that was far superior to wood where durable surfaces are required. As these credenzas were originally designed for office use, Formica was considered an exclusive and prestigious quality surface highly suitable for such applications. Considering that many use these credenzas for storage and presentation of multi-media equipment, the highly durable Formica surface seems very practical.
The four sliding doors conceal four compartments that have an adjustable shelf in each.
